Revelation Review – A Stop At The Millennium – A Quick Look Ahead
The chronology of the God-ordained events of the end times has been our scriptural direction of travel. We have discussed the rapture of the church (John 14:1-6; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:50-54). We have covered God’s wrath and judgments of the tribulation, from which believers in Christ will be delivered. There is no basis of scripture that gives permission to say that the wrath or judgments of the tribulation are those of the Anti-Christ (Revelation 6:1-16:21). While the tribulation has been occurring on earth, we have seen the resurrected and raptured new testament saints in Heaven, that were taken by Christ to the Bema Judgment for rewards, prior to the tribulation, (2 Corinthians 5:8, 10), then being taken to the Marriage Of The Lamb in Heaven (Revelation 19:7-8). At the time of The Marriage, we have seen all of the nations of the world gathering for an attack on Israel at the battle of Armageddon (Revelation 16:16;19:15; Zechariah 12:2-3; 14:2-3). Following The Marriage Of The Lamb, we have seen Christ descending back to earth with His bride (the raptured NT saints; Revelation 19:11-14), for His defeat of the attackers of Israel. (Notice that the Battle of Armageddon will not take place in “New York City, as a movie has shown it to be.”). The next stop for Christ and His Bride will be The Marriage Supper Of The Lamb, which will take place on earth during the millennium. The guests that will be invited to The Supper will be the saints of the Old Testament and the tribulation. It is important to understand that Christ will take the NT saints from earth to heaven for The Marriage of the Lamb; they can not get there, “any other way” (John 14:1-6). To make any of these events an allegory is to make the whole Bible an allegory.
This is where our study of God’s chronology of end of times events continues.
Forum on the Millennium
Revelation 20 New King James Version (NKJV)
THE REIGN OF CHRIST (The Thousand Years)
Satan Bound 1,000 Years
1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.
(My note) Satan will be bound for 1,000 years.
The Saints Reign with Christ 1,000 Years
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
(My Note, a bit of repetition) The tribulation saints are to be resurrected at the beginning of the millennium, which is the First Resurrection; they will rule and reign with Christ in the millennium. The First Resurrection will also include the righteous of the OT (Daniel 12:1-2). The deceased unbelievers of the tribulation, and of all times, will be resurrected in the Second Resurrection, at the end of the millennium, 1,000 years after the First Resurrection. The New Testament saints will be raptured, or resurrected from death, prior to the tribulation; they will return with Christ to earth from Heaven immediately following The Marriage of the Lamb. Ruling, along with the tribulation saints, will be the NT saints (2 Timothy 2:12/1 John 5:4) and OT saints (Ezekiel 37:24-27; Isaiah 14:1-2; 49:22-23; 60:14; 61:5; Amos 9:14-15; Jeremiah 30:9; Zechariah 8:22-23; Matthew 19:28; Luke 22:30; Romans 15:12). (See study notes on Daniel 12:2: John F. MacArthur, Charles C. Ryrie, C.I. Scofield, John F. Walvoord, J. Dwight Pentecost, for confirming comments on the resurrection of the saints of the Old Testament, New Testament and tribulation.) The souls and spirits of the OT, NT and Tribulation saints will be with God from the time of their death (OT Luke 16:23; NT/Tribulation 2 Corinthians 5:8). In the rapture of the church, the bodies of deceased NT saints will be resurrected to join their souls and spirits in heaven. In the First Resurrection of the millennium, the bodies of the OT and tribulation saints will be raised to join their souls and spirits on earth; then, they will be with the NT raptured and resurrected saints, ruling and reigning in the millennium (not to forget the celebration of The Marriage Supper). At the end of the millennium, in the resurrection of the unrighteous, the bodies, souls and spirits of the unrighteous of all ages will be joined. Next, in their eternal destiny, will be the Great White Throne Judgment, and The Lake of Fire. From the time of their death until this resurrection, the souls of the unrighteous have been experiencing torment in Hades (Luke 16:23: Ryrie and MacArthur Study Bible notes). The righteous are righteous, and have their spirits anchored in Christ (2 Cor 5:21), because their spirits have been born again (John 3:3). The unrighteous are unrighteous because their spirits have not been born again, and have not come to belief in Christ (John 3:18; Romans 8:1), being still in their state of unbelief from the fall of Adam (Genesis 2:17). The Great White Throne Judgment and Lake Of Fire await all of the unrighteous of all times. Only the righteous will enter into the eternal state of “new heaven, new earth and new Jerusalem” (Revelation 21:1-2).
Satanic Rebellion Crushed
7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. 9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. 10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
(My note) Satan will be released from the bottomless pit at the end of the millennium, and will lead unbelievers of the millennium in a revolt against God; God wins! Satan, the anti-Christ and the false prophet will be cast into the lake of fire, where torment is eternal.
The Great White Throne Judgment
11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
(My note) The unrighteous/unbelievers of all ages will stand before The Great White Throne Judgment where they will be judged based on their works. Believers will not be present; they will face no judgment; Christ took on their judgment. The unrighteous of all times will be cast into the lake of fire, where Satan, the anti-Christ and the false prophet occupy.
Parents! Please! Do not take your family to the Lake of Fire on “the family plan!” That is a horrible thing to happen. Please take this information seriously.
Given: (John 3:3) We must be born again to avoid the lake of fire and spend eternity with Christ. (John 16:7-11) When we have been born again, we have God’s Holy Spirit dwelling within our spirit convicting us of “sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” A sign that we have not been born again, and that we do not have a continual prompting of the Holy Spirit of “sin, and of righteousness and of judgment,” is our lifestyle, and not an individual act. Consider the evidence of people not having been born again, and not being prompted of the Holy Spirit to the things of God. Consider each indictment.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 New King James Version (NKJV)
9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
Consider that which took place in the lives of those after they were born again. There was a lifestyle change, because of a spirit change, with a continual prompting regarding, “sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”
1 Corinthians 6:11 New King James Version (NKJV)
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
LET’S GET BACK TO THE CAUTION!
If person leads a homosexual lifestyle, it is proof that they do not have God’s Holy Spirit dwelling within their spirit. It is proof that such a person has not been born again. It is also proof that such a person has their personal destiny in the Lake Of Fire. If a person has no problem with the murder of an unborn infant, it is proof that such a person has not been born again. If such a person supports, or votes for, political candidates that support same-sex marriage or abortion on demand, it is proof that such a person has not been born again. Please understand that, as 1 Corinthians 6:11 teaches, there are lifestyle changes that will show that a person has been born again, and is no longer a supporter of homosexuality, abortion on demand, or the other things that show a lack of a born again spirit.
LET’S GET BACK TO THE LAKE OF FIRE ON THE FAMILY PLAN.
The Democrat Party supports same-sex marriage and abortion on demand. Their party chairman, and their former candidate to lead the USA have stated that there is no place for “pro-life” people in the Democrat Party. Yet, there are people “that say they are Christians,” but continue to support the Democrat Party, with their money and votes. THOSE PEOPLE SHOW EVIDENCE OF NOT BEING BORN AGAIN! There are churches that have visiting Democrat leaders in their churches speaking in support of the Democrat Party. Parents, which say that they are Christians, and also Democrats, are placing their children in arenas of unrighteousness whenever they take their children to Democrat gatherings, whether it is in a church or at a political setting. When such a parent does not tell their children that the Democrat Party’s support of homosexuality and abortion on demand are in opposition to God’s Holy Word, they are confusing their children, and allowing them to believe that God approves of same-sex marriage and the killing of unborn babies. Our children, just as we, must be born again to be saved from the Lake of Fire. 1 John 1:5 says, “God is light, and in Him thee is no darkness.” Light refers to righteous. Darkness refers to not being righteous. Until we have been born again, all of us are “darkness.” After our new birth, we become “light.” By being born again, with our spirit residing within God’s Holy Spirit, within the Spirit of Christ, our spirit also begins dwelling within the Spirit of God, “the Father.”
Nobody should want any other person to spend their eternity in the Lake of Fire. Neither should any parent put their children in the presence of people who may speak things that are contrary to God’s Holy Word. Parents are directed by God to teach their children the things of God (Deuteronomy 6:1-9), which are designed to lead children to lives of righteousness. When parents allow their children to be taught things that are not of God, those teachings are of Satan and are designed to lead people to destruction (John 10:10).
PLEASE DON’T SHOOT THE MESSENGER!
Parents, your lifestyle has a lot to do with the direction in life that your children will follow, and the one in which their children will also follow. I trust that you will recognize that my heart’s desire is to encourage you, and your children, to stay on the path that leads to eternal life with Christ. Please follow that path, and not the one that can lead you, and your whole family, to the Lake of Fire “on the family plan.”
NOTES: MacArthur Study Bible
20:2 a thousand years. This is the first of 6 references to the length of the millennial kingdom (cf. vv. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Christ will return and reign in a real kingdom on earth for 1,000 years
20:3 bottomless pit. All 7 times that this appears in Revelation, it refers to the place where fallen angels and evil spirits are kept captive, waiting to be sent to the lake of fire—the final hell prepared for them (Matt. 25:41).
20:3 released for a little while. Satan will be released so God can make a permanent end of sin before establishing the new heaven and earth. Satan will then gather unbelievers for one final, futile rebellion against God. It will be quickly and decisively crushed, followed by the Great White Throne Judgment and the establishment of the eternal state.
20:4 the souls of those who had been beheaded. These are tribulation martyrs (cf. 6:9; 18:24; 19:2). The Gr. word translated “beheaded” became a general term for execution, not necessarily a particular method. his mark. See note on 13:16. Tribulation martyrs will be executed for refusing the mark of the beast. reigned. Tribulation believers, along with the redeemed from both the OT and NT eras, will reign with Christ (1 Cor. 6:2; 2 Tim. 2:12) during the 1,000 year kingdom.
20:5 the rest of the dead. The bodies of unbelievers of all ages will not be resurrected until the Great White Throne Judgment (vv. 12, 13). first resurrection. Scripture teaches two kinds of resurrections: the “resurrection of life” and “the resurrection of condemnation” (John 5:29; cf. Dan. 12:2; Acts 24:15). The first kind of resurrection is described as “the resurrection of the just” (Luke 14:14), the resurrection of “those who are Christ’s at His coming” (1 Cor. 15:23), and the “better resurrection” (Heb. 11:35). It includes only the redeemed of the church age (1 Thess. 4:13–18), the OT (Dan. 12:2), and the Tribulation (v. 4). They will enter the kingdom in resurrection bodies, along with believers who survived the Tribulation. The second kind of resurrection, then, will be the resurrection of the unconverted who will receive their final bodies suited for torment in hell.
20:6 Blessed. Those who die in the Lord (14:13) are blessed with the privilege of entering His kingdom (see note on 1:3). second death. The first death is only physical, the second is spiritual and eternal in the lake of fire, the final, eternal hell (v. 14). It could exist outside the created universe as we know it, outside of space and time, and be presently unoccupied (see note on 19:20). thousand years. See note on v. 2.
20:7 Satan…released. He is loosed to bring cohesive leadership to the world of rebels born to the believers who entered the kingdom at the beginning. He is loosed to reveal the character of Christ-rejecting sinners who are brought into judgment for the last time ever.
20:8 Gog and Magog. The name given to the army of rebels and its leader at the end of the Millennium. They were names of ancient enemies of the Lord. Magog was the grandson of Noah (Gen. 10:2) and founder of a kingdom located N of the Black and Caspian Seas. Gog is apparently the leader of a rebel army known collectively as Magog. The battle depicted in vv. 8, 9 is like the one in Ezek. 38, 39; it is best to see this one as taking place at the end of the Millennium. For the difference, see notes on Ezek. 38, 39.
20:9 beloved city. Jerusalem (cf. Pss. 78:68; 87:2), the capital city during Christ’s millennial reign (Jer. 3:17). The saints will be living around the city where Christ reigns (cf. Is. 24:23; Jer. 3:17; Zech. 14:9–11). fire. Frequently associated in Scripture with divine judgment of wicked men (Gen. 19:24; 2 Kin. 1:10, 12, 14; Luke 9:54; 17:29).
20:10 deceived. Just as his demons will entice the world’s armies into the Battle of Armageddon, Satan will draw them into a suicidal assault against Christ and His people (16:13, 14). lake of fire and brimstone. See note on 19:20. tormented day and night. See note on 14:11. Continuous, unrelieved torment will be the final state of Satan, fallen angels, and unredeemed men.
20:11–15 These verses describe the final judgment of all the unbelievers of all ages (Matt. 10:15; 11:22, 24; 12:36, 41, 42; Luke 10:14; John 12:48; Acts 17:31; 24:25; Rom. 2:5, 16; Heb. 9:27; 2 Pet. 2:9; 3:7; Jude 6). Our Lord referred to this event as the “resurrection of condemnation” (John 5:29). This judgment takes place in the indescribable void between the end of the present universe (v. 11) and the creation of the new heaven and earth (21:1).
20:11 great white throne. Nearly 50 times in Revelation there is the mention of a throne. This is a judgment throne, elevated, pure, and holy. God sits on it as judge (cf. 4:2, 3, 9; 5:1, 7, 13; 6:16; 7:10, 15) in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. See 21:5, 6; John 5:22–29; Acts 17:31. earth and the heaven fled away. John saw the contaminated universe go out of existence. Peter described this moment in 2 Pet. 3:10–13 (see notes there). The universe is “uncreated,” going into non-existence (cf. Matt. 24:35).
20:12 standing before God. In a judicial sense, as guilty, condemned prisoners before the bar of divine justice. There are no living sinners left in the destroyed universe since all sinners were killed and all believers glorified. books. These books record every thought, word, and deed of sinful men—all recorded by divine omniscience (see note on Dan. 7:9, 10, the verse that is the source of this text). They will provide the evidence for eternal condemnation. Cf. 18:6, 7. Book of Life. It contains the names of all the redeemed (Dan. 12:1; see notes on 3:5). judged according to their works. Their thoughts (Luke 8:17; Rom. 2:16), words (Matt. 12:37), and actions (Matt. 16:27) will be compared to God’s perfect, holy standard (Matt. 5:48; 1 Pet. 1:15, 16) and will be found wanting (Rom. 3:23). This also implies that there are degrees of punishment in hell (cf. Matt. 10:14, 15; 11:22; Mark 12:38–40; Luke 12:47, 48; Heb. 10:29).
20:13 Death and Hades. See note on 1:18. Both terms describe the state of death. All unrighteous dead will appear at the Great White Throne Judgment; none will escape. All the places that have held the bodies of the unrighteous dead will yield up new bodies suited for hell.
20:14 second death. See note on v. 6.
20:15 lake of fire. See note on 19:20.
19:20 beast was captured, and…the false prophet. In an instant, the world’s armies are without their leaders. The beast is Antichrist (see notes on 13:1–8); the false prophet is his religious cohort (see notes on 13:11–17). cast alive. The bodies of the beast and the false prophet will be transformed, and they will be banished directly to the lake of fire (Dan. 7:11)—the first of countless millions of unregenerate men (20:15) and fallen angels (cf. Matt. 25:41) to arrive in that dreadful place. That these two still appear there 1,000 years later (20:10) refutes the false doctrine of annihilationism (cf. 14:11; Is. 66:24; Matt. 25:41; Mark 9:48; Luke 3:17; 2 Thess. 1:9). lake of fire. The final hell, the place of eternal punishment for all unrepentant rebels, angelic or human (cf. 20:10, 15). The NT says much of eternal punishment (cf. 14:10, 11; Matt. 13:40–42; 25:41; Mark 9:43–48; Luke 3:17; 12:47, 48). fire…brimstone. See note on 9:17. These two are frequently associated with divine judgment (14:10; 20:10; 21:8; Gen. 19:24; Ps. 11:6; Is. 30:33; Ezek. 38:22; Luke 17:29).
