“This beast had all the authority of the first beast. It did what the first beast wanted. It made the earth and all who live on it worship the first beast. The first beast was the one whose deadly wound had been healed.” (Revelation 13:12 – NIRV – New International Reader’s Version)

II. The Beast From The Earth.

A. Text. Revelation 13:11-18 (NKJV)

11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

13:11 “another beast.” This man is Antichrist’s lieutenant, who will enforce the worship of Antichrist by performing miracles (vs 13), by making and animating an image of Antichrist (vs 14-15), by sentencing to death those who disobey (vs 15), and by requiring a mark on the hand or forehead in order that men may buy and sell (vs 16-17). Satan, the Antichrist, and this second beast form and evil trinity.
13:18 “his number is 666.” Somehow, unknown to us, this number will play an important part in the identification of the Antichrist in a future day.

13:15 speak. The false prophet will give the image of Antichrist the appearance of life, and the image will seem to utter words—contrary to what is normally true of idols (cf. Ps. 135:15, 16; Hab. 2:19). cause…to be killed. His gentleness is a lie, since he is a killer (7:9–17). Some Gentiles will be spared to populate the kingdom (Matt. 25:31–40) and Jews will be protected (12:17).
13:17 buy or sell. Antichrist’s mark will allow people to engage in daily commerce, including the purchase of food and other necessities. Without the identifying mark, individuals will be cut off from the necessities of life. number of his name. The beast (Antichrist) will have a name inherent in a numbering system. It is not clear from the text exactly what this name and number system will be or what its significance will be.

D. Comments: C.I. Scofield (deceased). Scofield Reference Notes. https://www.studylight.org/commentaries/srn.html

13:16 “he causeth.” Antichrist the person is to be distinguished from the “many antichrists” 1 John 2:18 and the “spirit of antichrist” 1 John 4:3 which characterizes all. The supreme mark of all is the denial of the Christian truth of the incarnation of the Logos, the eternal Son in Jesus as the Christ John 1:1; John 1:14. (See Scofield “Matthew 1:16”). The “many antichrists” precede and prepare the way for the Antichrist, who is “the Beast out of the earth” of Revelation 13:11-17 and the “false prophet” of; Revelation 16:13; Revelation 19:20; Revelation 20:10. He is the last ecclesiastical head, as the Beast of Revelation 13:1-8 is the last civil head. For purposes of persecution he is permitted to exercise the autocratic power of the emperor- Beast. (See Scofield “Revelation 19:20″).

E. Outline And Comments: Dr. John F. Walvoord (deceased).

1. The following comments and outline of Rev 13:11-18 are from the work of Dr.John F. Walvoord. A complete commentary of Dr. Walvoord on Rev 13 can be read by clicking on the following link. https://bible.org/seriespage/13-beasts-and-false-prophet The following link provides a history of Dr. Walvoord. https://bible.org/users/john-f-walvoord

a. From verses 11-12 of chapter 13: After the revelation of the first beast, John now beholds another beast coming up out of the earth and occupying a secondary role supporting the activities of the first beast. In contrast to the first beast which comes out of the sea, the second beast is said to come out of the earth. He is of similar nature to the first beast. The same word for beast (Gr., the„rion) is used as well as the word “another” (Gr., allo) meaning “one like in kind.” Though some have interpreted the word earth as referring to the Holy Land, it is the general word for the earth (Gr., ge„). If the sea, mentioned as the source of the first beast, represents the mass of humanity indicating the racial background of the first beast as a Gentile, the reference to the second beast as coming out of the earth indicates that this character, who is later described as a false prophet

b. From verse 18 of Revelation 13: Chapter 13, taken as a whole, is one of the great prophetic chapters of Scripture and is the only passage which presents in any detail the two principal evil characters of the end of the age who form with Satan an unholy trinity. Here is clearly presented the fact that the head of the revived Roman Empire ultimately becomes the ruler of the entire world. Dominated by Satan, he is Satan’s masterpiece and substitute for Christ, and is aided and supported by the second beast called the false prophet. Many have alluded to the contrast of this evil trinity with the heavenly Trinity, Satan corresponding to God the Father, the first beast corresponding to Christ, and the second beast corresponding to the Holy Spirit. George W. Davis expresses a common view that this is a false trinity: “This trinity will consist of Satan as God, Antichrist, the counterfeit of Christ, as Christ, and the false prophet, a travesty on the Holy Spirit.”

2. The following comment comes from “Every Prophecy Of The Bible, Prophetic Revelation III: The Beast out of the Land,” John F. Walvoord, pg 587-588. “The importance of this chapter (Rev 13, mine) is that world history leading up to the second coming of Christ (end of the tribulation, mine) will be dominated by these two characters (Antichrist and False Prophet, mine), especially in the last 3 1/2 years before the Second Coming. The world leader (Antichrist, mine) will actually for a time exercise political authority over the entire world and the supporting character, the beast out of the earth, will give his support supernaturally and cause people to worship the world ruler. The worship of this world ruler and the recognition of Satan also as deity brings apostasy to its most dramatic revelation. The evil in Satan’s and men’s hearts is allowed in its full manifestation but will be subject to the judgment of God at the time of the Second Coming (of Christ, mine).

F. Comments. The Identity Of The Anti-Christ and False Prophet. Revelation Illustrated And Made Plain, pg 189, Tim LaHaye, (deceased) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_LaHaye …. Because the identities of these two beasts will not be revealed until the middle of the Tribulation Period, and the Church will be raptured before the Tribulation, it seems more than likely that “we” will not be given a hint as to the identities of the Antichrist or False Prophet. (the “we,” in the comment of Dr. LaHaye, relates to the born again believers in Christ that will be caught up in the rapture of the church…John 14:2,3,6…1 Cor 15:50-54…1 Thes 4:13-18).

  1. Of course! The identities of the two beasts will not be revealed until three and a half years into the tribulation. I knew it but it just clicked!
    We won’t be here.
And of course we don’t know from Scripture how long after the church is taken the tribulation begins.
