End Times 33, Revelation 20:1-15, The Millennium

I. Introduction. Revelation Chapter 20 discusses the Kingdom Age of the Millennium. The Kingdom is an earthly existence. The Millennium is the length of time that the Kingdom, or Kingdom Age, will exist. In order for anyone to understand Revelation Chapter 20, there must be an understanding of what the Kingdom is, and what the Kingdom is not. This article will first explain the things that relate to the Kingdom, in its prophesied earthly existence. Following, will be a discussion on the events that must occur between the time that we now occupy in history, to the time of the Kingdom Age. Then, each verse of Revelation Chapter 20 will be discussed, as to the things that will occur during its duration.

II. Key Focus. Understanding The Kingdom Age.

A. In Revelation 20:4, we see the words, “a thousand years.” A millennium (plural millennia or millenniums) is a period of one thousand years, sometimes called a kiloyear. … Millennia sometimes have religious or theological implications (see millenarianism). B. The millennium (thousand years), as shown in Rev 20, is the length of time of the fulfillment of:

1. The Abrahamic Covenant: Gen 12:1-3; 15:18-21, 17:1-8.

2. The Davidic Covenant:2 Sam 7:8-16.

3. Pre-Christ Prophecy: Isa 2:1-4. Mic 4:1-4.

4. Time Of Christ’s Teaching. Matt 3:1-3; 4:17; 10:5-7. Luke 10:9.

C. The term, “millennium,” is not shown in Scripture. The “thousand years” of Revelation 20:4, is the length of time that will cover the Kingdom Age.

D. A dispensation is a period of time during which man is tested in respect of obedience to some specific revelation of the will of God. Seven such dispensations are distinguished in Scripture. (Scofield’s Reference Notes).

E. The Kingdom Age (1,000 years) is the final dispensation of seven dispensations. 1. Innocence (Gen 1:3-3:6). 2. Conscience (Gen 3:7-8:14). 3. Human Government (Gen 8:15-11:9). 4. Patriarchal Rule (Gen 11:10-Ex 18:27). 5. Mosaic Law (Ex 19:1-Acts 1:26). 6. Grace (Acts 2:1-Rev 19:21). Kingdom. (Rev 20:1-15). (Scofield’s Reference Notes; Ryrie, “Dispensationalism).

F. The Kingdom Age will have the “very good” conditions of the Garden of Eden that existed through Gen Chap 2 (Gen 1:31, 2:25). Such Edenic conditions in the Kingdom will exist until the Battle of Gog and Magog (Rev 20:7-10) takes place, which is a result of the attack on God’s people by the many children (Rev 20:8) of Jews and Gentiles who enter the Kingdom, having been born again, but entering the Kingdom in mortal bodies. These Kingdom-born children will have to accept Christ, and be given resurrection bodies by God, to enter the eternal state (Rev 21:1-2); but, many will not come to such saving faith in Christ. Such unbelievers will be like unbelievers in our present age; they will be taught the truth of Christ (Isa 2:2-3), but many will reject Christ as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev 19:16), and will be the deceived members of the army that will attack Jerusalem at the end of the 1,000 years (Rev 20:8-9). [(1) Anyone living in the Kingdom, having a natural body (flesh and blood, perishable) will not be able to enter the eternal state (1 Cor 15:50). (2) In the Rapture, “the dead in Christ” will rise first, and then “the living” will be instantaneously transformed (1 Cor 15:51-52). G. The Jews of the Tribulation who come to saving faith in Christ (Mt 24:31, 40-41), will be left behind on earth to enter the Kingdom in mortal bodies. Gentiles of the Tribulation who come to saving faith in Christ, will also be left behind on earth to enter the Kingdom in mortal bodies (Mt 25:31-34).

H. Raptured and Resurrected saints of the church age will return from Heaven (Jn 14:2-6) with Christ for the Battle of Armageddon (Rev 19:14), and will enter the Kingdom in resurrection bodies. Old Testament saints will be resurrected at the end of the Tribulation to enter the Kingdom in resurrection bodies (Dan 12:1-3). Saints who die during the Tribulation will be resurrected at the end of the Tribulation to enter the Kingdom in resurrection bodies (Rev 20:4).

I. Old Testament saints will rule and reign with Christ (Dan 12:1-3; Matt 19:28) in their promised Kingdom area (Israel, Gen 15:18-21). Church age saints will rule and reign with Christ outside of Israel (1 Cor 6:2). In these two examples of ruling and reigning, those whom have resurrection bodies will rule and reign over those whom have mortal bodies. During the Kingdom Age, people from all over the world will go to Jerusalem to keep Jewish feasts, and to worship Christ (Zech 14:16-19; Mt 26:29); those not having resurrection bodies will come under the rule and reign of those whom have resurrection bodies (1 Cor 6:2).

J. See the following MacArthur Study Bible note: 14:16–19 This very important passage reveals that some Gentiles will go into the millennial kingdom alive along with the redeemed Jews. A converted remnant from those heathen nations will make annual pilgrimages to Jerusalem to worship the LORD and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles during the Millennium. Commemorating the time when God “tabernacled” with Israel in the wilderness, the feast represented the last of the 3 major pilgrimage festivals (Lev. 23:34–36), marked the final harvest of the year’s crops, and provided a time of rejoicing. In the Millennium, it will celebrate Messiah’s presence, again dwelling among His people, and the joyful restoration of Israel, including the ingathering of the nations. Those who refuse to go will experience drought and plague. Tragically, as the thousand years go on, there will be many people from all over the world who will reject Christ as Savior and King, joining in a final war against Him, only to be destroyed and cast into hell forever (cf. Rev. 20:7–15). [my note: Mt 26:29, which was not Christian communion but was an observance of Passover (there was no church then), will also be observed in the Kingdom.] (My note: the correct wording of Rev 20:10, is “the lake of fire and brimstone, and Rev 20:14,15 is “the lake of fire,” as opposed to “hell.” The correct wording of “hell” in Rev 20:13, 14 is “hades.”)

K. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, which was followed by the curse (Gen 3), the Kingdom was removed from the Earth, and will not return until Christ reigns on the throne in Jerusalem (Rev 19:11-21; Isa 2:1-4). The Kingdom was restored in a limited form during the time of Moses, and continued until the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.; the “times of the Gentiles” (Lk 21:24, Gentile domination of Jerusalem) followed and will last until Christ takes His place on the throne in Jerusalem. The lack of a Jewish King over Israel began when King Zedekiah was dethroned by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. The next Jewish King that will reign over Israel will be Christ, when He returns from Heaven at the end of the Tribulation (Mt 24:29-30). Because of the sin of Adam and Eve, and the following curse, the total perfection of the Garden of Eden, will not be present again until the time of the eternal state (Rev 21-22). During the time of the the Kingdom (Rev 20), the Garden perfection will be limited on earth. There will be death in the Kingdom Age (Isaiah 65:20); Satan will be released from the abyss to deceive unsaved mankind at the end of the Kingdom Age (Rev 20:7), and will launch an attack against Christ and His people (Rev 20:8-9); Satan loses (Rev 20:9). In the eternal state, Satan will not be present (Rev 20:10); there will be no death, or any kind of sin, or anything that is sin-related (21:8).

L. At our present time, God is keeping Jupiter from bumping into Mars, but Satan is “the prince of the power of the air (Eph 2:2), and is the ruler of this world (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11; 2 Cor. 4:4.).

M. God has chosen the covenant seed of Abraham to be the people through whom He will provide a Savior for a fallen world (Gen 3:15), and through whom He will reestablish His Kingdom on earth (Gen 12:1-3; 18:6-8; 26:1-4; 35:9-12; Isa 9:6-7). It is very clear in Deu 14:2 of God’s choice for Israel to be, “… a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for His personal possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.”

N. There are Bible translations that translate Luke 17:21 as, “the kingdom of God is within you”. So, we will address such a wording.

1. The Kingdom is described in Gen 15:18-21 as being a parcel of land that extends from the Nile River in Egypt to the Euphrates river in Iraq.

2. The Kingdom is described in 2 Sam 7:8-16 as being a place for Israel, where a seed of David will establish His Kingdom.

3. The Kingdom is described in Isa 2:1-4 as being a place of ideal living conditions, being taught and ruled by our Lord, Messiah, Christ.

4. The Kingdom is described by Christ in the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5-7), and other teachings of Christ (Lk 6:27-38), as being a place of Godly ethics and morality.

5. Considering the fact that the Kingdom will be a place with people, a place of Godly rulership, a place having
the mountain of the house of the Lord, with teaching and judging by Yahweh, where such as Mt 5:41-42 will exist: “41 Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.” We must conclude that the translation of Lk 17:21 must be reconsidered. We will add 17:20 for proper context.

a. 20 Now He was questioned by the Pharisees as to when the kingdom of God was coming, and He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs that can be observed; 21 nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

b. Notice that Pharisees, whom had not accepted Christ as Messiah, were questioning Him. Those people had not been born again. They were hostile to Christ, so nothing Godly could be “within them.” Per Ryrie Study Bible, “the Kingdom was completely unconnected with the Pharisees.” Per Scofield Study Bible, “the kingdom was actually ‘in the midst’ of the Pharisees in the persons of Christ and His disciples. Ultimately, the kingdom of heaven will come visibly to earth at our Lord’s second coming. See, 17:24, “For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day.” The phrase, “Son of Man,” was known to Jews from Daniel 7:13.

P. The correct translation of Lk 17:21 is: “the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

Q. By believing that “the Kingdom of God is within you,” there is a common misunderstanding that the born again process puts the Kingdom “within us,” but the born again experience allows us to be present in the Kingdom, as is described in Rev 20:1-6, and other scriptures, per Ezek 36:24-28, John 3:3, 2 Cor 5:17. In other words, the kingdom doesn’t go into people; people go into the kingdom.

R. The words, “Kingdom of God and Kingdom of Heaven” have the same meaning. The Kingdom on earth will be under the power of God in Heaven. The new heaven, new earth, and new Jerusalem of Rev 21:1-2 will appear after the present heaven, earth, and Jerusalem are destroyed at the end of the Kingdom Age of the Millennium, per 2 Pet 3:10. S. An often overlooked teaching of the Kingdom Age is that saved Gentiles will share in the blessings that God has promised saved Israel. The subject of being “grated in,” (Rom 11:17-24), has an important not in the Ryrie Study Bible, “The root of the tree is the Abrahamic Covenant that promised blessing to both Jew and Gentile through Christ. See Gen 12:3. Saved Gentiles will not become Jews during the Kingdom Age, but will share in the Covenant blessings that God has promised for the Saved Jews to inherit.

III. Key Events Leading To Kingdom Age.

A. From where we are now in present day history, there are two key events that remain to be fulfilled in God’s calendar that will precede the Kingdom Age.

1. 1 Thes 4:16-17; which is the Rapture of the church age saints. The purpose of the rapture is to remove church age saints from earth, where they will be taken to Heaven (John 14:2-6; 1 Cor 15:50-54).

a. Rapture is a state or experience of being carried away. The English word comes from a Latin word, rapio, which means to seize or snatch in relation to an ecstasy of spirit or the actual removal from one place to another. In other words, it means to be carried away in spirit or in body. The Rapture of the church means the carrying away of the church from earth to heaven.

b. The Greek word from which this term “rapture” is derived, appears in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, is translated “caught up.” The Latin translation of this verse used the word rapturo. The Greek word it translates is harpazo, which means to snatch or take away. Elsewhere it is used to describe how the Spirit caught up Philip near Gaza and brought him to Caesarea (Acts 8:39) and to describe Paul’s experience of being caught up into the third heaven (2 Cor. 12:2-4). Thus, there can be no doubt that the word is used in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 to indicate the actual removal of people from earth to heaven.

3. Jer 30:7, which tells of Israel’s place in the Tribulation, will follow the Rapture, and is designed for God to draw unsaved Jews to saving faith in Christ. With the church having been removed from the earth, God’s sole focus is unsaved Israel. Unsaved Gentiles, whom are also left behind, will be blessed by the Jews, even during the time of Tribulation.

4. Dan 9:27, which tells of the Tribulation, will not occur until the Anti-Christ affirms a covenant with the Jews, which will begin the seven years of Jacob’s distress (Tribulation).

B. God has promised the Church deliverance from divine wrath (1 Thess. 1:10; 5:9; Rev. 3:10) God made a special promise to the church that it will be delivered from the future, tribulational wrath of God. C. At the time that anyone comes to saving faith in Christ, and is born again, such a person’s spirit has the Spirit of Christ dwelling within their spirit, and is therefore as righteous as is the Spirit of Christ, (2 Cor 5:17,21). No Godly judgment of the Tribulation can make a born again believer in Christ, any more righteous, or any more worthy, of dwelling with Christ throughout eternity. All judgments of the Tribulation are poured out on earth by Christ or angels (Rev 6:1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 8:1, 2, 5, etc.)

D. The Tribulation must precede the Millennium (Ryrie Study Bible, note on Joel 3:9-17). We will now discuss things of the Kingdom Age of the Millennium.

IV. Kingdom Age. Rev 20.

A. Preview.

1. Rev 20 is a view of the Kingdom Age in a nutshell. The duration of the Kingdom Age is 1,000 years, and is also known as the Millennial reign of Christ.

2. MacArthur Study Bible Note. Rev 20:1—22:21. Chapter 19 ends with the Battle of Armageddon and Christ’s second coming—events that mark the close of the Tribulation. The events of chap. 20—the binding of Satan, Christ’s 1,000 year earthly kingdom, Satan’s final rebellion, and the Great White Throne Judgment—fit chronologically between the close of the Tribulation and the creation of the new heaven and the new earth described in chaps. 21, 22.

B. Rev 19 NASB 1995 Text and Comments (MacArthur Study Bible notes, unless otherwise noted). .

1. Satan Bound-Text-vs 1-6.

a. 1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.

b. 4 Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.

2. Comments vs 1-6.

a. 1-3. KJV Study Bible. 20:1–3. The bottomless pit is simply the Abyss (Gr. abussos), the abode of evil spirits (cf. 9:1–11; Luke 8:31). The key shows authority, and the chain depicts imprisonment and binding. Before the millennial kingdom begins, Satan (cf. 12:9) is bound in the Abyss. The seal indicates God’s authority and guarantee that Satan will not be released until a thousand years have passed. During the Millennium (Latin for “one thousand years”) Satan will not be able to tempt or deceive the nations. Any temptation to sin during the Millennium must come from within those people who are born after the kingdom begins. It must be assumed that all of Satan’s demons or fallen angels are also imprisoned at this time (cf. Is. 24:21–23). Christ will reign on earth without opposition, and His kingdom will be characterized by righteousness, peace, and love (cf. Is. 2:3, 4; 11:3–5; 35:1, 2; Dan. 7:14; Zech. 14:9). However, after the thousand years Satan will be released for a short while (vv. 7–9).

b. 4. the souls of those who had been beheaded. These are tribulation martyrs (cf. 6:9; 18:24; 19:2). The Gr. word translated “beheaded” became a general term for execution, not necessarily a particular method. his mark. Tribulation martyrs will be executed for refusing the mark of the beast. reigned. Tribulation believers, along with the redeemed from both the OT and NT eras, will reign with Christ (1 Cor. 6:2; 2 Tim. 2:12) during the 1,000 year kingdom.

c. 5. the rest of the dead. The bodies of unbelievers of all ages will not be resurrected until the Great White Throne Judgment (vv. 12, 13). first resurrection. Scripture teaches two kinds of resurrections: the “resurrection of life” and “the resurrection of condemnation” (John 5:29; cf. Dan. 12:2; Acts 24:15). The first kind of resurrection is described as “the resurrection of the just” (Luke 14:14), the resurrection of “those who are Christ’s at His coming” (1 Cor. 15:23), and the “better resurrection” (Heb. 11:35). It includes only the redeemed of the church age (1 Thess. 4:13–18), the OT (Dan. 12:2), and the Tribulation (v. 4). They will enter the kingdom in resurrection bodies, along with believers who survived the Tribulation. The second kind of resurrection, then, will be the resurrection of the unconverted who will receive their final bodies suited for torment in the lake of tire.

d. 6. Blessed. Those who die in the Lord (14:13) are blessed with the privilege of entering His kingdom. second death. The first death is only physical, the second is spiritual and eternal in the lake of fire, the final, eternal lake of fire (v. 14). It could exist outside the created universe as we know it, outside of space and time, and be presently unoccupied.

3. Satan Freed, Doomed. Text. vs 7-10.

a. 7 When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, 8 and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore. 9 And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

4. Comments. vs 7-10.

a. 7. Satan…released. He is loosed to bring cohesive leadership to the world of rebels born to the believers who entered the kingdom at the beginning. He is loosed to reveal the character of Christ-rejecting sinners who are brought into judgment for the last time ever.

b. 8. Gog and Magog. The name given to the army of rebels and its leader at the end of the Millennium. They were names of ancient enemies of the Lord. Magog was the grandson of Noah (Gen. 10:2) and founder of a kingdom located N of the Black and Caspian Seas. Gog is apparently the leader of a rebel army known collectively as Magog. The battle depicted in vv. 8, 9 is like the one in Ezek. 38, 39; it is best to see this one as taking place at the end of the Millennium.

c. 9. beloved city. Jerusalem (cf. Pss. 78:68; 87:2), the capital city during Christ’s millennial reign (Jer. 3:17). The saints will be living around the city where Christ reigns (cf. Is. 24:23; Jer. 3:17; Zech. 14:9–11). fire. Frequently associated in Scripture with divine judgment of wicked men (Gen. 19:24; 2 Kin. 1:10, 12, 14; Luke 9:54; 17:29).

d. 10. deceived. Just as his demons will entice the world’s armies into the Battle of Armageddon, Satan will draw them into a suicidal assault against Christ and His people (16:13, 14). lake of fire and brimstone. tormented day and night. Continuous, unrelieved torment will be the final state of Satan, fallen angels, and unredeemed men.

5. Judgment at the Throne of God. Text. vs 11-15.

a. 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

6. Comments. vs 11-15.

a. 11. great white throne. Nearly 50 times in Revelation there is the mention of a throne. This is a judgment throne, elevated, pure, and holy. God sits on it as judge (cf. 4:2, 3, 9; 5:1, 7, 13; 6:16; 7:10, 15) in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. See 21:5, 6; John 5:22–29; Acts 17:31. earth and the heaven fled away. John saw the contaminated universe go out of existence. Peter described this moment in 2 Pet. 3:10–13. The universe is “uncreated,” going into non-existence (cf. Matt. 24:35).

b. 12. standing before God. In a judicial sense, as guilty, condemned prisoners before the bar of divine justice. There are no living sinners left in the destroyed universe since all sinners were killed and all believers glorified. books. These books record every thought, word, and deed of sinful men—all recorded by divine omniscience (Dan. 7:9, 10, the passage that is the source of this text). They will provide the evidence for eternal condemnation. Cf. 18:6, 7. Book of Life. It contains the names of all the redeemed (Dan. 12:1). judged according to their works. Their thoughts (Luke 8:17; Rom. 2:16), words (Matt. 12:37), and actions (Matt. 16:27) will be compared to God’s perfect, holy standard (Matt. 5:48; 1 Pet. 1:15, 16), and will be found wanting (Rom. 3:23). This also implies that there are degrees of punishment in the final judgment (cf. Matt. 10:14, 15; 11:22; Mark 12:38–40; Luke 12:47, 48; Heb. 10:29).

c. 13. Death and Hades. Both terms describe the state of death. All unrighteous dead will appear at the Great White Throne Judgment; none will escape. All the places that have held the bodies of the unrighteous dead will yield up new bodies suited for hell. [death represents the deceased body…see Lk 16:22b. hades represents the condition of torment…see Lk 16:23].

d. My Comment. 20:13. Luke 16:19-31. The rich man was dead, with his body in the grave; this man was dead, with his soul experiencing torment in Hades. Once a believer dies, the body is in the grave (so to speak) and the soul is in the Presence of God, in a state of comfort (as was Lazarus). At the time of the rapture and resurrection, the church age bodies of the “dead in Christ” will be raised to be physically in the Presence of Christ, forever (1 Thes 4:16-18). The righteous whom die prior to the church age, and in the tribulation, will have their deceased bodies raised at the end of the tribulation (Dan 12:2, Rev 20:4). As in the case of Lazarus, all deceased righteous saints, of all times, will have their souls (consciousness) in the Presence of God, from the time of their death until the time of their bodily resurrection, at which time their “bodies, souls and spirits” (1 Thes 5:23) will be reunited. There is no such thing as soul sleep.

e. 14. second death. See note on v. 6.

f. 15. lake of fire. See note on Rev 19:20. 19:20 beast was captured, and…the false prophet. In an instant, the world’s armies are without their leaders. The beast is Antichrist (Rev 13:1–8); the false prophet is his religious cohort (Rev 13:11–17). cast alive. The bodies of the beast and the false prophet will be transformed, and they will be banished directly to the lake of fire (Dan. 7:11)—the first of countless millions of unregenerate men (20:15) and fallen angels (cf. Matt. 25:41) to arrive in that dreadful place. That these two still appear there 1,000 years later (20:10) refutes the false doctrine of annihilationism (cf. 14:11; Is. 66:24; Matt. 25:41; Mark 9:48; Luke 3:17; 2 Thess. 1:9). lake of fire. The final judgment, the place of eternal punishment, for all unrepentant rebels, angelic or human (cf. 20:10, 15). The NT says much of eternal punishment (cf. 14:10, 11; Matt. 13:40–42; 25:41; Mark 9:43–48; Luke 3:17; 12:47, 48). fire…brimstone. These two are frequently associated with divine judgment (14:10; 20:10; 21:8; Gen. 19:24; Ps. 11:6; Is. 30:33; Ezek. 38:22; Luke 17:29).

V. Summary.

A. The Kingdom of God is that of which Isaiah prophesied, as a physical Kingdom which will be present on earth, with Christ ruling from Jerusalem (Isa 2:3, 9:6-7, etc.).

B. There is discussion today of “Kingdom Now Theology.” However, there can be no Kingdom without a King present and ruling. The King, Christ, is not presently ruling on earth, and will not be present on earth until the events of prophecy are fulfilled, such as those stated in Zech 12:9-10 and 14:1-4, at the end of the Tribulation and in the Battle of Armageddon:

1. “And in that day I will set about to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem” (Zech 12:9).

2. “Behold, a day is coming for the Lord…. (He) will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle…Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle….His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east;” (Zech 14:1-4).

C. Peace will not come upon the Earth until Christ returns from Heaven to Earth, and physically rules and reigns from Jerusalem.

1. “And the Lord will be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord will be the only one, and His name the only one.” (Zech 14:9)

2. There will be only one religion in the entire world during the millennial reign of Christ. Ruling with a rod of iron (cf. Rev. 19:15), Christ will have done away with all false religions spawned by Satan. This will be the ultimate fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant providing a Jewish people, the nation of Israel, and the land given to Abraham; the Davidic Covenant which promised a king from the tribe of Judah and the line of David; and the New Covenant which held out the hope of spiritual redemption for Jew and Gentile. All of this will be fulfilled in and by the Lord Jesus Christ. (MacArthur Study Bible note). [The new covenant is an example of Gentile believers being blessed by God’s blessings on Jews. Jer 31:31. “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.” The new covenant is made between God and Israel, and will be fulfilled when Christ returns to earth with His born again believers (Ryrie Study Bible). Although certain features of the New Covenant have been fulfilled for believers in the current Church Age, e.g., knowledge of God and forgiveness of sin, the covenant remains to be realized for Israel according to the explicit statement of v 31, “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.” (Scofield Study Bible).

D. If we were to think that we are in the Kingdom Age now, we would have to conclude that Christ is not doing a good job of ruling and reigning. Worldly peace is not present. The conditions of Isaiah 2 are nowhere to be found.

In blog post, Israel 10 – Exodus 15-24, we see that God delivered the Israelites from their bondage in Egypt. After God led the Israelites through the Red Sea to safer land, He provided all of their human needs. God also gave the Law to the Jews, to include the Sabbath. Now, we see that God has put His chosen people to work, building a tabernacle.

Offerings to Build the Tabernacle
1 The Lord spoke to Moses: 2 “Tell the Israelites,”8 “They are to make a sanctuary for Me so that I may dwell among them. 9 You must make it according to all that I show you—the pattern of the tabernacle as well as the pattern of all its furnishings.

God gave directions for the Israelites to build a tabernacle; He also gave precise instructions for the job. In this, and following articles, we will discuss, in detail, each of these structures:

The phrase “tent of meeting” is used in the Old Testament, specifically in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, as the name of a place where God would meet with His people, Israel. Usually, the “tent of meeting” was used as another name for the Tabernacle of Moses. However, before the tabernacle was constructed, God met with Moses in a temporary tent of meeting: “Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the ‘tent of meeting.’ Anyone inquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. . . . As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses” (Exodus 33:7, 9). The fact that Moses set up the tent of meeting outside of the camp underscored that the people had broken fellowship with God at Sinai when they had made the golden calf (see Exodus 33:3). After the tabernacle was built, Moses no longer needed his temporary tent, and the term tent of meeting began to be applied to the tabernacle.(Continued in link)

The following information discusses the progression of construction, destruction and reconstruction of “Solomon’s Temple,” where God’s Presence dwelt within “the holy of holies/most holy place.” Information is also provided to show that, in all following temples, the Presence of God will never dwell, except the Millennium Temple. After the destruction of Solomon’s Temple in 586 B.C., the Presence of God was never present in the reconstructed temple of Zerubbabel, or the renovated Herod’s Temple, or will be Present in the yet future Tribulation Temple. There will not be the Presence of God in any temple until the Millennial Temple is built, which will follow the Tribulation. During the time that Christ walked the Earth, He never went into “Holy of Holies,” in the Temple in Jerusalem because, He was/is “the Most Holy/the Holy of Holies.” The following article discusses the details of the temple’s destruction:

Notice, in the following timeline, that the Jews got the tabernacle completed in one year from the date that God told them to build it.

Consider the Tribulation Temple. The Anti-Christ will most likely authorize the construction of the temple during the first part of the Tribulation, and place it on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem; yet, God is in control of the temple (Revelation 11:1, “the temple of God”). There will be a Temple that will be placed by God in Jerusalem during the Millennium (Ezekiel 37:26), following the Tribulation. The Glory of the Lord had previously been seen by the Jewish prophet Ezekiel, in a vision, with the Glory departing the temple in 594 B.C. (Ezekiel 9:3; 10:4; 10:18-19, 11:22-23). The Glory will not return to any temple, until the future kingdom of Messiah has been established, and the Millennial Temple has been placed there (Ezekiel 43:2–7; 44:4, as was seen by a later vision of Ezekiel in 574 B.C.). There is no scriptural proof of the Glory of God returning to the rebuilt or remodeled temples of Zerubbabel or Herod. Presently, there is no temple in Jerusalem. The Tribulation temple (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4, Revelation 11:1-2) will not be one of Godly inhabitance. It will only be when Christ sets up His Millennial Kingdom, that God’s Gory will be present in the Temple in Jerusalem.

It is important to understand that regarding the law, including Temple worship, Christ has fulfilled all of the requirements of the Law, with that fulfillment being finished on the cross at Calvary. It is only through the finished work of Christ on the cross that anybody can have salvation (Matthew 5:17; John 1:29; John 4:19-24; John 19:30).
